David Weldon achieves ICCF International Master Title

Playing in ICCF Master Norm sections these days, in the face of such tough competition, all with like minded players competing for the 2 norms required for the title, must be one of the hardest ways to gain this title. Having to score 8 points from 12 games is no mean feat, so it's with great admiration and pleasure that EFCC announces that David Weldon has achieved the ICCF International Master title by doing this twice in the past 2 years. He won master norm section 132 with an impressive 8.5/12 and recently won master norm 150, scoring 8/12. See https://www.iccf.com/event?id=63845

Update on the 2016/7 Counties & District CCC

The three Divisions on the 2016/7 Counties & District CC Championship have just over one month of play remaining, but many issues are already decided.

In Division 2 (Sinclair), a fantastic performance from East Wales A has seen them take the Divisional Title with 14.5/16!
They will be promoted to Division 1 (Ward-Higgs) next season.
The 2nd place, and final promotion spot, lies between Suffolk & Yorkshire C with just one game remaining to decide the issue.
Worcester A & Lincolnshire are both relegated to Division 3 (Butler-Thomas).

Division 3 (Butler-Thomas) saw two outstanding teams dominating the Division. Somerset won the Divisional Title scoring a remarkable 15/16.
They will be joined in promotion to Division 2 by West Wales B who scored 14/16.

Division 1 (Ward-Higgs) still has 5 games ongoing, and these games will decide all issues.
West Wales A lead the Division on 10 points with one game ongoing. They can now only be caught by Surrey A who have 7.5 with 3 games remaining.
Yorkshire A currently stand in 2nd place on 9.5 but they have now finished all their games.
The two relegation places will be decided between Hampshire, Hertfordshire A & Essex B.

Sue Howell achieves the Lady International Master Title

Sue Howell achieves the Lady International Master Title

Very well done to Sue Howell who achieved her 3rd LIM norm in the 10th Ladies Olympiad final. Sue's first norm was back in October, 2009 in the 9th Ladies Championship followed a year later by a second norm in the 8th Ladies Olympiad final. Having to achieve 3 norms is always tough and Sue has shown great perseverance in making the required norms over the required 24 games after her first 2 tournaments only giving her 19 games.

Congratulations also go to Gary Maguire who has achieved his first CCM norm in the 2016/8 British Championship.

GM Keith B Richardson.

It is with great sadness, EFCC report the recent passing of GM Keith B Richardson. Born in Nottingham in 1942, Keith was Britain's first CC Grandmaster as well as also being a strong over the board player.

Keith finished 3rd in the 7th ICCF World Championship and repeated the feat in the 10th World Championship. Keith also notably came 2nd in the strong Von Massow Memorial tournament. Keith was once described by ICCF as one of only two “truly outstanding” English players of the late 20th century.

Before becoming a Grandmaster in 1975, Keith came second in the British Correspondence Chess Championship (1964-5), and throughout the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, he was a member of the British teams in the ICCF Olympiad Finals. He retired from international play in 2001.

Even in his seventies, Keith was still active OTB in the Surrey Border Chess League and as recently as this month's April edition, one of his 4NCL games features in the popular 'CHESS' magazine, where there's an article by Carl Portman on page 37. Keith was a former BPCF President and life patron of the English Federation for Correspondence Chess as well as being a key figure within the NATCOR club. In 2015, he received the English Chess Federation’s President Award for services to chess recognising his OTB contributions.

Despite his success, Keith will be remembered for being a very sporting and modest man.

The following are excerpts from a lovely recent tribute by Andy Walker, President of the OTB Nottinghamshire Chess Association:

'Keith was in my class at Nottingham High School (NHS) and luckily also in my house, so I never had to face him in house matches! But he was also a top cricketer, opening the batting for NHS and for England Schools, a scratch golfer and a concert-standard pianist.

When I learned to play chess, in the Lower Fifth, Keith was already the best player in the school, and vying to be the best in the county. By the time we left NHS, five years later [1961], he had been county champion and Midlands champion, and NHS under his captaincy was one of the top schools in the country. Keith went on to win the British U21 Championship in 1962 and to play international chess for the British Student team. He then turned to correspondence [postal] chess, playing many times for England and coming third (twice) in the World Championship, earning the Grandmaster title en route.

He continued to play top board for Notts for some years. His performances over the board never quite matched his skill by post as his quest for perfection always left him short of time, leading to mistakes in won positions. But his best games showed a mastery of chess beyond that of any other player I know, including some strong grandmasters. His pieces gained the upper hand square by square, until they dominated the position. In later years, he played regularly for the OTB England Senior team. He accepted his rating was "going south" with the same calm assurance that he showed throughout his life.

He married Sandra in 1966, on a day perhaps more memorable to everyone else for England playing Germany in the football World Cup Final'

EFCC will discuss what will be the most appropriate way to commemorate Keith's legacy at their next meeting.

Sincere condolences to his wife Sandra, family and friends.

Here are the moves to Keith's win against the 7th World Champion, Yakov Estrin of Russia. This proved to be Estrin's only defeat in this World Championship Final.

EFCC positions vacant

EFCC are looking for willing volunteers to take up three vacant positions. First of all, the webmaster position needs someone to give this website some attention and maintain it. Content can be updated by most of the EFCC officers but nobody really has the expertise to be in overall charge and maintain it. Secondly, EFCC are searching for a new secretary to take over from Colin Cheek. This is a position on the EFCC executive committee, which meets twice a year. The secretary is responsible for taking the minutes of these meetings and generally being a point of contact for EFCC matters. Finally, a qualified auditor is needed to audit the EFCC annual financial accounts. If anybody is interested in discussing any of these posts or requires further information, please contact our current secretary, Colin Cheek or Andrew Dearnley.

Best Game Prize 2015

Congratulations to SIM Ian Pheby, who has won the Potter/Wason best game prize for 2015. Ian's winning entry was his win with White over Keith Kitson in the Gordon Evans Memorial British Championship 2014-6.

We are grateful to GM Nigel Robson for judging this year's competition. Nigel commented that the "game is well played on both sides of the board. Black's aggression is countered by White's impressive piece management. A flourish of activity in the middle game unbalances the opposing material, and then White's handling of his queen and bishop pair gives him the decisive edge and eventual victory. It is an entertaining and instructive game." The winning game can be seen at https://www.iccf.com/game?id=749425
