IVOR DAVIES' CHESS MARATHON

Ivor Davies at the all night chess marathon

Our founder Ivor Davies is pictured playing an all night chess marathon with a friend (Tom Weston) in a shop window in his parish to raise money for charity.

They were served refreshments by ‘uniformed waiters’.

Parishioners and others dropped by throughout the night to see how the game progressed and donate money.

THE AMPLEFORTH CONNECTION

Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire sponsored and hosted the British (later English) Chess Federation Junior Masters for 6 years from 2000 to 2005.

The College is part of Ampleforth Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery which was home to one of our members, the late Justin Caldwell.

These photos from the last championship held at Ampleforth in 2005, acknowledge Justin's involvement.

ANOTHER CHRISTMAS CARD

Photo of the Christmas card 'mystery'

This is another individually drawn Christmas card, but not one sent to me. It shows a clergyman pondering his chess moves while the choir sings a carol.

Inside is the greeting, “With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, and all your games except one” and is signed by, H.M. Whitcombe. I have no record of him as a member of the Club in my time as Secretary (nearly 30 years), but one of our older members does vaguely recall the name.

The card was sent to Alan Mackenzie who was CCCC Champion in 1972 and (jointly) 1976. Alan, who died in 1997, spent over 40 years of his ministry as a Chaplain to the deaf for which he was awarded the OBE, and the card was sent to me by his widow.
